Hello from DC’s winter wonderland! Seriously – will spring ever get here?! It’s unclear at this point…
I’m happy that my marathon is in Los Angeles this coming weekend, and not DC, that’s for sure! It’s snowing like crazy out there and isn’t supposed to stop until late afternoon.
Since winter will apparently never end, Matt and I decided to take advantage of the white fluffy stuff and go skiing again over the weekend! Since, you know, going skiing the weekend before your second full marathon is a really smart idea… 😉 Whatever – considering I’m not exactly going to win the race or anything, it seemed silly to say no to fun adventures in the meantime!
We headed back to Whitetail, where we were a couple weeks ago for the day, but this time stayed for the weekend – we rented a house with a bunch of friends.
We got up there late on Friday and hit the slopes first thing on Saturday, after a relaxing breakfast in the house. Matt and I brought up a bunch of groceries for the group so we wouldn’t starve. 😉
On the menu: a veggie, egg, and sausage scramble. Yum! I also had an unpictured banana, and then late morning I enjoyed a KIND bar (the KIND almond & coconut bars are my fave) on the slopes. Yes, I need to eat a lot in the mornings. 🙂
My college friend Sarah, who you’ve seen on here a lot as one of my fave running buddies, joined for the trip, which was great because she is also a more beginner/intermediate skier like me. We let the rest of the group hit up the black diamonds (Matt included – he’s good!) and we stuck to the greens and blues.
We all rendezvoused for lunch around 1. The lodge actually has a pretty epic create your own salad option – awesome! I got a big one with lots of veggies, chicken, strawberries (love them in salad), some cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. Hit the spot. Plus some unsweetened iced tea on the side.
Then it was back to the slopes! We all skied until around 3 or 4 and then headed back to the house to relax for awhile before dinner. Speaking of dinner, in an awesome turn of events, the boys all cooked while the ladies and I hung out and watched them. Now that’s how it should be, right?! 😉
We all enjoyed some whole wheat pasta with a ground turkey and veggie-packed tomato sauce with some sautéed spinach on the side. So good!
After dinner, we headed out for the most fun part of the whole day: night skiing! We were able to walk back to the slopes from where we were staying which was so awesome.
I’m not sure I’d ever been night skiing before and it was SO fun. The slopes were way less crowded and the whole group of us stayed together and had fun with it. There was a cool little park with jumps and stuff off the side of one of the green slopes and we mostly hung out in there, watching the guys do cool tricks. (It was easy to ski down the side of it.)
Yay night skiing!
What a fun and action packed day. We all slept VERY well on Saturday night, that’s for sure!
On Sunday, we cleaned up, headed out, and swung by a cute little place in Hagerstown called Saffron Bakery & Café for breakfast before parting ways. I had an awesome made-to-order ham, egg, and cheese sandwich on a crusty whole wheat bread.
We were back in DC by early afternoon, which was nice. We were happy to see this little face again. 🙂
Time to get back to work while watching the snow fall. Not gonna lie – I miss the days of no internet when a snow day meant a real day off from work! I’m definitely noticing a lot less emails coming in, though, which means I can focus on getting some things on my to-do list done that I’ve been ignoring for awhile! Hoping to make some time later today for a yoga DVD (I rarely do at home workout DVDs since I love getting out and about for workouts – and our apartment is tiny – but I love this yoga DVD) and a little snow playing time though, too.
Have a happy Monday, friends! Is it snowy where you are, too?
