Hi friends! I had a fun weekend on the food and fitness front.
On Friday night, Matt and I went out to dinner at one of our favorites, a cute and cozy Italian spot called Il Raddicchio. We shared the arugula salad to start and for my entrée, I had the “rosticceria pollo e salsiccia tortelloni”, which is pulled rotisserie chicken over fire roasted kale and Italian sausage tortelloni in a chicken and white wine broth. Soooo good. My camera phone didn’t really do it justice. 🙂
I also enjoyed a glass of Chianti.
It fueled me up well for a fun workout on Saturday morning! I had made plans to get in a nice long run with my friends Kathleen and Sarah, but sadly the weather was completely absurd (frostbite territory with the windchill), and we decided we were too wimpy to brave it. Sarah wasn’t feeling a workout, but Kathleen and I decided to hit up Urban Athletic Club instead!
The workout was awesome, as always. A great and varied mix of HIIT style cardio, heavy dumbbell weighted moves, and TRX stuff.
Kathleen and I had fun with this one – you put your hands on little sliding pieces and then run across the floor. We raced, cackling as we usually nearly ran into the wall on each side – photo finish. 😉
Andrew was coaching, and he’s one of my faves – fun and high energy. Thanks to him for snagging these photos! Here’s the whole workout we did, in case you’re wondering. Also, hi to blog reader Hannah! 🙂
My brother was in town this weekend to visit since I missed him over the holidays, so we met up on Saturday afternoon after he arrived for some Sweetgreen. Yummm.
Saturday night, Matt, my brother, and I met up for happy hour at a friend’s place followed by dinner at Boulevard Woodgrill. Since I had a couple beers at happy hour, I stuck to water with dinner. I got the lamb salad, which is my favorite – so good!
The guys all went out from there and my brother and I split off to go see Wild – I was disappointed in the movie, to be honest. I really liked the book but I felt like the movie fell flat – it was slow, and felt kind of like nothing happened. Bummer!
On Sunday morning, I was super excited to get in a RUN!!! This is my “yay for running without frostbite” pose:
The weather was still cold, but up to the low 30s and without crazy wind, plus it was nice and sunny. Perfect! (I wore an ear warmer and gloves, but by the end of the run warmed up enough to take them off.)
Since all my running plans for earlier this week were foiled due to the extreme weather (I know I COULD have still run, but the combination of the extreme cold AND the fact that all the sidewalks were really icy/snowy was just not appealing), I was itching to get some miles in. I had a lot of energy and felt great out there!
The first couple miles were slower since they were basically straight uphill and we had to keep slowing down to dodge ice on the sidewalks, but the second half was sunnier, clearer, and flat or downhill. Yay!
Splits:
- Mile 1: 10:02
- Mile 2: 9:48
- Mile 3: 9:20
- Mile 4: 8:11 (yay no ice/flat)
- Last 0.3 mile pace: 7:20 (downhill/no ice)
When we got home, I refueled with an omelette filled with veggies and topped with avocado:
Plus a couple of my Healthy Peanut Butter Power Cookies and some unpictured berries.
I’m going to do a post soon about my running goals for the new year, so stay tuned. I needed a bit of a break from serious training for awhile there after doing back to back full marathons (Richmond Marathon last fall and LA Marathon in the spring), but I think I’m finally feeling ready to train for real/for speed again. We’ll see!
How was your weekend of food/fitness? Any great workouts or meals?
A couple things before I go:
- Speaking of running, Jason of Strength Running and I are kicking off our Nutrition for Runners program/ebook partnership by answering/highlighting some of your running-specific nutrition questions in a Q&A video! We want to know – what are your biggest questions about food, fueling, weight loss, and nutrition for runners? Ask your question in this survey and then sign up here to be notified when our Q&A presentation is ready. We won’t be sharing it on our blogs, so don’t forget to sign up for the listserv!
- My Wild Blueberry friends shared a fun Q&A with me on their blog to kick off a series of guest posts I’ll be writing for them over the next few months. Check it out to see where I find recipe inspiration, what motivates me to stay fit in winter, my tips for intuitive eating, the biggest mistake I see my nutrition clients making, and more.
