Why I Love High Protein Oatmeal
I love adding cottage cheese (or Greek yogurt) to both sweet and savory breakfast recipes for an extra boost of protein (1/3 cup of cottage cheese, which is what I use in this recipe, packs between 10 and 15g protein depending on the brand)! Protein is essential for fueling your body, and making sure each meal has enough protein will help keep you satisfied and feeling full much longer.
Not only that, but melty cottage cheese makes oatmeal deliciously creamy while also adding a perfect hint of tangy flavor. And, it’s just as good in savory oatmeal as it is in sweet oatmeal!
What You’ll Need
Gather your ingredients for this easy cottage cheese oatmeal recipe:
- banana (A natural sweetener for this oatmeal! The riper is it, the sweeter the oatmeal will taste.)
- rolled oats (Also known as old-fashioned oats.)
- milk of choice (Dairy milk, unsweetened almond milk, any kind you like!)
- cottage cheese (I love full-fat cottage cheese for extra nutrients and creaminess! It’s just more satisfying overall.)
- cinnamon
And of course, any toppings you want! Fruit, berries, ground flaxseed, nuts, seeds, shredded coconut, nut butter – it’s all delicious here.

How to Make Cottage Cheese Oatmeal in the Microwave
This microwave oatmeal recipe is so quick and easy! (It’s really similar to my microwave banana oatmeal, but with an extra protein boost from cottage cheese.)
Start by mashing the banana in a bowl with a fork. Next, stir in oats, milk, and cinnamon.
Next, microwave for 2-3 minutes. (If using frozen berries, take out halfway and stir in the berries, then finish microwaving. Fresh berries can be added after cooking, before serving.)
After microwaving, stir in the cottage cheese (and nut butter if using). Then, add fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or any other desired toppings. That’s it – time to dig in!
Not feeling a hot breakfast? You can also stir cottage cheese into overnight oats! It adds creaminess and a lightly tangy, cheesecake-like flavor.
Storage Tips
Didn’t finish your oats? No problem! Just place in an airtight container (or cover the bowl with airtight plastic wrap) and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, just microwave until warmed through.
