Let’s all just stop for a minute and say “Shawarma” out loud. Does anyone else find that word really fun to say?
Shawarma. Shawarma! Shaaaaawaaaaaarrrrmaaaaa.
::Cough::
No?
…Anyway.
Behold — Chicken Shawarma Pita Pitza!
Isn’t it beautiful?
My favorite Lebanese restaurant, Aladdin’s Eatery, has mastered the art of pita “pitzas”. I’m obsessed with them, but I’ve never gotten the nerve to try to make one at home. Until now 😉
This week’s Project Food Blog challenge was to create our own variation of the Italian classic, pizza! For the purpose of the challenge, pizza was defined as having a solid base, a sauce, and at least one topping. It was fate — pita pitzas, here I come!
I started by perusing Aladdin’s Pita Pitza menu for inspiration. Finally, I decided on a compilation of a bunch of my favorites, and my Chicken Shawarma Pita Pitza was born!
Here’s how to make your very own Chicken Shawarma Pitza! It’s easy, I promise. What you’ll need:
- 1 whole wheat pita, toasted
- Hummus
- Fresh tomato, sliced
- Chicken Shawarma (details below)
- Cucumber Yogurt Garlic Sauce
- Fresh parsley
Yep, I totally brought the whole pan of chicken and the whole food processor full of cucumber yogurt garlic sauce outside. That’s just how I roll, friends.

How to Make a Chicken Shawarma Pita Pitza
~ Step 1 ~
Toast a whole wheat pita.
~ Step 2 ~
Spread toasted pita with hummus, either store bought or homemade.
I actually made my own homemade hummus for the first time for this pitza! I used this recipe and it came out great. Yay 🙂
~ Step 3 ~
Top hummus with sliced fresh tomato.
~ Step 4 ~
Add a few pieces of the chicken shawarma!
To make the chicken shawarma, I took boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut them into bite sized-ish pieces, and marinated them for about 20 minutes in the first 6 ingredients from this recipe. Then I simply sauteed it all in a pan until the chicken was cooked through.
All done! Most of the liquid cooked down.
Yummy 🙂
~ Step 5 ~
Drizzle the cucumber yogurt garlic sauce on top!
Yum. I originally created the yogurt sauce recipe to go with my Secret Ingredient Falafel, and I’d forgotten how good it is! 🙂
~ Step 6 ~
Top it all off with a bit of chopped fresh parsley:

CHOMP. Delicious and messy — just how I like my pizzas! Don’t be fooled by the fork and knife in the first photos — they were not used 😉
Yep. Everything I hoped and more. Must make this again. And again. And again.
You know the only thing that could have made this even better? Oh, don’t be coy. You know what I’m talking about.
p.p.s. Shawarma.
