Hello and happy Monday, friends!
I had a fantastic (fANNEtastic?) weekend in Cape May, NJ at the beach with my college BFF Turner and her family!
I’ve seriously been so spoiled with all these awesome trips lately! Turner’s family owns a condo in Cape May and I’ve been inviting myself there just about every summer since college 🙂 Her family is awesome and we always have a blast.
Last summer was the first summer I missed in years because I was so swamped with finishing work and my prerequisites (intensive in-person microbiology and online biochem = death) before heading to start school at UNC. I promised her parents I would never miss a summer again 😉 It was wonderful to be back!
Here are some highlights. 🙂
1) Hot dogs at Hot Dog Tommy’s!
Hot Dog Tommy’s is one of my absolute favorite places in Cape May! It’s a walk up hot dog stand right by the beach, and every summer we stop by at least once for a beach lunch of hot dogs. Everyone loves this place and there’s always a huge line because not only are the hot dogs delicious (creative toppings, too), but Tommy himself is practically a celebrity in Cape May. We spent Friday at the beach and clearly had to pay him a visit! Look — I got a photo with him!!
Aren’t his rainbow shoes and his hot dog hat awesome? He wears them every day 🙂
I got two hot dogs — one traditional with relish, mustard, and extra ketchup:
And one Jersey Slaw Dog! It’s Turner’s favorite so I decided it was time to try it 🙂 It comes topped with mustard and a cranberry slaw — so yummy and not too mayonnaise-y, either.
2) A dolphin-filled boat trip!
Turner’s parents own a boat and know that I love going out on it, so they were excited to take us for a ride. Their dog, Tagus, came along too! He’s my favorite 🙂
He’s a Portuguese Water Dog, which means he’s hypoallergenic and doesn’t shed at all. Awesome! Plus, he’s adorable 🙂
I kind of want to steal him. 🙂
We had such a fun boat ride — and look who came out to play — dolphins!!
There were a ton right around our boat! Apparently they are all over the place in Cape May. We saw some from the beach the day before, too. I love watching them play. One even jumped for us!
3) Ice cream at Bliss Homemade Organic Ice Cream.
Apparently I get really excited about good ice cream
This place is brand new and I think it’s seriously THE best ice cream I’ve ever had. I had the cinnamon clove flavor — AHHH!!! Amazing. It’s whipped style ice cream so nice and smooth and creamy, and I love that all the ingredients are organic, too. If you’re ever in Cape May, please show them some love! 🙂 They’re located in the Carpenter’s Square indoor walking mall area, at 31 Perry Street. Right by Geckos’s mexican restaurant, where we went for dinner! (Also amazing)
4) A 5 Mile Run through Cape May!
On Saturday morning, Turner and I got up and did a 5 mile run through town and along the sea wall. It was hot and sweaty but I love the scenery in Cape May (cutest houses ever) and it felt good to be out and moving!
We ran the 5 miles in 43:49 for an average pace of 8:44.
Splits:
- Mile 1: 8:50
- Mile 2: 8:37
- Mile 3: 9:00
- Mile 4: 8:43
- Mile 5: 8:30
Good times!
5) Climbing the Cape May Lighthouse
Surprisingly I’d never done this before in all my years visiting Cape May!
At the top — it was WINDY up there!
Very cool. I love lighthouses 🙂
A big thank you to Turner and her family for such an amazing weekend! It was great seeing you guys 🙂
I’m back in DC now but leaving again tomorrow morning with Matt to head to our friend Tim and Lindsey’s lake house! If you’re new to the blog — I promise I’m not always on vacation, heh. One more week of freedom then it’s back to crazy busy grad school life! Although, I think I should probably just become a professional vacation-er instead. 😉 I could definitely get used to this!
Ta-ta for now, friends!
