Good morning!
Another wonderful whirlwind of a weekend was had! Why do they all go by so fast?!
I spent the weekend up in Cape May, New Jersey, with two of my college BFFs and bridesmaids. Here we are! Me, Kris, & Turner (whose actual name is Laura… that’s her college nickname). Turner’s family has a condo in Cape May so I usually invite myself there at least once per summer. 😉
Cape May is one of my favorite beach towns. It’s so cute! I love all the houses.
I arrived at the beach around 9 p.m. on Friday after a long drive up after work. The girls and I spent the rest of the night relaxing and catching up. On Saturday, we awoke to a rainy day — brunch it was.
We went to brunch at a place called the Mad Batter — awesome breakfast place name, right? We took a stroll around Cape May while waiting for our names to be called (it was PACKED) and then finally snagged a table about 30 minutes later. Cute menu!
For brunch, I enjoyed an omelette stuffed with mushrooms, spinach, tomato, and cheddar cheese with a side of fruit:
Plus a side of bacon, obvi. 🙂
And the girls and I ordered french toast to all share because it sounded amazing — it was an orange and almond french toast! SO good.
Delicious brunch! After eating, we strolled around town some and then Kris had to head out to go meet up with some friends in Philadelphia. She’s moving overseas for work soon so she’s trying to see as many people as she can before leaving!
Turner and I spent the rest of the day relaxing, hit up the beach for a couple hours in between storms, and then headed to dinner at the Cape May Point Red Store!
I wish I’d gotten some photos of the outside of this place because it was SO cute — it’s a big, beautiful house that serves as a general store and casual breakfast/lunch place during the day, and recently they started doing dinner as well. Everything is in small portions with the idea to get a bunch of things and share, which is what we did!
The restaurant has a beautiful outdoor patio but it was pouring out (and thundering and lightning!) so we stuck to the indoors. Since it was packed inside, we actually scored a spot at the bar looking in to the kitchen — it was so fun to sit there and watch all the action! The front door you can see behind Turner was open so we could hear the storm which was fun, too. I felt so cozy!
The restaurant is BYOB, so Turner and I picked up a bottle of this Pinot Gris from a vineyard in Oregon where Turner and her husband Will have visited before. It was delish!
As I mentioned, Turner and I basically ordered a ton of different things and shared everything. I love doing this — so many tastes!
First up — they brought us an amuse bouche of grilled peaches with a balsamic reduction. YUM — I love grilled fruit.
Followed by Cape May salt oysters with house made tomato and horseradish vinegar and pickled shallots.
Atlantic Salmon Ceviche — strawberry, jalapeno, cucumber, scallions, avocado, red bell pepper and Thai chili gazpacho. This was one of my favorite dishes of the night — delicious combination of flavors!
This salad isn’t on the online menu yet so I can’t remember exactly what it was called, but it was a salad with fig, pistachios, wheatberries, and grapefruit. Amazing — another favorite of the night.
Followed by a squid dish — stuffed with kale and chorizo — and some crunchy polenta on the side. This was Turner’s favorite of the night!
Next up — crispy soft shell crab with a watermelon salad. Yes, the watermelon is yellow! Not sure I’ve seen that before.
And a side of corn and quinoa spoon bread. Yum!
Obviously we had to get dessert, too, to round things out. We ordered a peach melba sundae type dish, and were amused when it came out and a candle was in it! We had been talking about our birthdays (mine is in a few weeks, Turner’s is in October) and saying that mine was on a Friday and Turner’s was on a Saturday — the waiter overheard and thought we meant it was one of our birthdays that night! We told them it wasn’t but that we’d accept the candle, anyway. 😉
What a delicious meal — seriously one of the best I’ve had in a very long time! Not outrageously priced, either. We both left full but not uncomfortably stuffed since the portions were small and we shared everything. I’m definitely coming back to this place next time I come to Cape May. Wonderful food, awesome ambiance, great service! Two big thumbs up.
It was wonderful to spend some quality time with Turner, too. 🙂
She’s actually moving to DC next weekend to do a year long fellowship at the Smithsonian for her Ph.D. research — I’m pretty much dying of excitement to have her around! Turner and I were roommates in college; senior year we literally lived in a room the size of a closet together and somehow still spent all of our time together and never got sick of each other. It’s going to be awesome to live in the same city — ever since college she’s been in Philly and I’ve been either in DC or NC or overseas.
This post is getting a bit long so I’ll share the rest of our weekend adventures later! It involves exercise — gotta balance out all that delicious food. 🙂
