Dairy Free Avocado Banana Smoothie
Avocado might seem like an odd smoothie ingredient, but I promise it’s actually delicious. It adds a ton of creaminess (hello texture!) and healthy fats for staying power, and it balances out this smoothie’s flavors perfectly.
I also love the addition of pineapple here, especially because you can use fresh or frozen. It brightens up the smoothie with a hint of tropical flavor, while the banana and honey add just enough sweetness. (For another tasty tropical-inspired smoothie, try this mango pineapple kale smoothie with Greek yogurt!)
As a huge smoothie enthusiast, I have tons of smoothie recipes on my blog. In addition to this creamy avocado smoothie, I highly recommend trying this simple 3-ingredient banana spinach smoothie, or this delicious chia berry and Greek yogurt smoothie.
One of my favorite things about smoothies is how versatile they are. You can almost always use any type of milk you prefer (dairy milk, almond milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, etc.), and you can often swap out the fruit for whatever fresh or frozen fruit you have on hand.
They’re also so quick and easy to make! This green smoothie with avocado comes together in just 5 minutes, and it has plenty of staying power to keep you energized for hours.
(If you love hidden veggie smoothies, try this creamy beet fruit smoothie too!).
What You’ll Need
Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this avocado fruit smoothie:
- almond milk (I recommend using plain or vanilla unsweetened almond milk. That way, you can control the amount of sweetness/sugar in the smoothie. You can also use any other milk of choice, such as dairy milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, soy milk, etc.)
- avocado (Make sure the avocado is ripe! Otherwise, the flavor and texture won’t be right. A ripe avocado should have a little give when squeezed – but not too much, or it’s overripe. Brown spots on the green flesh also indicate that the avocado is overripe.)
- banana (The riper it is, the sweeter it will taste.)
- pineapple (You can use fresh or frozen pineapple.)
- kale leaves (Any kind of kale should work, just be sure to remove the tough stems first. You can also use spinach instead!)
- honey (You can substitute this for pure maple syrup if preferred (and to make the smoothie vegan), or just omit it entirely for a less-sweet smoothie.)
- ground flax seed (This adds healthy fat and protein and extra staying power to the smoothie. Chia seeds would also work!)
- ice (If using all frozen fruit, you may not need ice; it depends on your preferred smoothie texture.)
You can also easily swap out different fruits (like mango for pineapple, add blueberries or strawberries, etc.) depending on what you have on hand and what you like. You do you!
Just a note that if you add berries, though, it will change the nice green color of this smoothie to more of a brownish color. It will taste great but it won’t look quite as pretty, if that matters to you!

How to Make an Avocado Smoothie
Making this avocado kale smoothie is super simple! Just add all the ingredients to a blender and whirl away.
If you’re using fresh pineapple, you’ll have to core and slice it first. This corer (Amazon affiliate link) is a dream – it makes coring pineapple (and other fruits and veggies) much easier.
You may not need to add ice to the smoothie, depending on how much frozen fruit you add. Feel free to add it last (after blending everything else) to ensure your preferred smoothie texture.
Lastly, just pour into a glass and enjoy!
How to Freeze Bananas for Smoothies
Freezing browning bananas is my favorite hack for reducing waste AND making smoothies delicious! It’s super easy, too.
First, peel the banana, then break it into smaller chunks that will more easily fit in your blender. Place the banana chunks into a freezer-safe zippable bag or container, and place in the freezer. That’s it!
Now, you’ll have frozen bananas ready and waiting for the next time you want to make a smoothie.
Which fruits pair well with an avocado smoothie?
Avocado has a mild flavor, making it a perfect addition to basically any fruit smoothie!
It pairs well with tropical flavors (like pineapple, mango, and coconut), any type of berry (blueberries, cherries, strawberries, etc.), bananas, peaches, melon… the list goes on.
Is this smoothie vegan and gluten free?
This smoothie is gluten free, but the addition of honey means it isn’t technically vegan (depending on the school of thought). Fortunately, you can easily leave the honey out (for a less sweet smoothie), or replace it with pure maple syrup, which is vegan, instead.
I hope I have convinced you to try this creamy and delicious avocado smoothie recipe! It’s so versatile, satisfying, and quick to make – it just might be your new favorite smoothie. 🙂 Enjoy!
